Textiles at Creative Growth: Rug Workshop

In 1987 based on the success of a five-year pilot project, the San Francisco Foundation helped establish a hooked rug workshop in the Creative Growth studio.
The rug pieces made in the textile studio originate from one of a kind Creative Growth artist designs. Each rug is hand hooked using a vintage “thrusting” tool, monk's cloth and acrylic and wool yarns. The rug pieces are worked on collectively, by groups of Creative Growth artists taking part in the textile workshop.
The style of the rugs varies from contemporary to folk and traditional projects. Each rug is made in a limited edition and is always one of a kind as a result of material color variation and individual artist technique.
Creative Growth rugs have received much acclaim, having been featured in exhibitions at Moss Gallery in SoHo, NY, The Oakland Airport, Barney’s New York, The Outsider Art Fair, New York, and appearing in publications such as ELLE Decor, Paper Magazine, ANP Quarterly, “O” (Oprah) at Home, the San Francisco Chronicle, and California Magazine.
The workshop also serves as a vocational project that provides artists with the technical skill and opportunity to hand make and design one of a kind textile pieces.
