Jo Beal is an artist whose material of predilection is fiber. She begins with an underlying structure, in many cases a rod or frame, before carefully wrapping it in layers of thread. Some pieces become dense with layers of reds and yellows, whereas others remain more bare, the threads forming a kind of lace that only just cover the underlying structure. Jo pays particular attention to textures, and chooses threads with varying line qualities, from mohair’s fuzzy quality to cotton’s more defined line. Since becoming part of Creative Growth Art Center, Jo has already established a clear and intentional visual language, which she continues to build on with every new piece.
