John Mullins (Alum)

Born 1969, Ridgecrest, California
Practiced at Creative Growth 2008–2019

With a street-graffiti sensibility, John Mullins exudes a modern aesthetic that recalls the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Boldly colored in a pop palette of neon tones and saturated primary hues, John’s drawings usually revolve around his favorite places, modes of transportation, or objects, including swimming pools, subway trains, airplanes, radios, cassette tapes, and headphones. John’s statements are steadfast as they are firm in opinion when paired with text—a succinctly stated personal affirmation in the form of, “John Mullins. Yes. Likes.” Executed in paint pen and acrylic paint, John’s artwork is both gestural and graphic, creating a striking stylistic juxtaposition.
