Ying Ge Zhou

Born 1978, Guangdong, China
Has practiced at Creative Growth since 2010

Ying Ge came to Creative Growth with a strong aptitude for drawing and painting. She has created numerous works with a focus on painting, both on paper and textiles. Using fashion and entertainment magazines as source material, Ying Ge translates a static ad into a dynamic portrait. Sometimes sketching non-stop for hours, Ying Ge will create a pile of studies from which larger works will emerge. Rendered in simple lines suffused by washes of ink or watercolor, each subject takes on an enigmatic psyche.

In order to stay afloat in our watery world of icons and images, we rarely digest everything we see. Ying Ge on the other hand, surrounded by a foreign culture, renders theses images as a form of translation, perhaps searching for something more human, more complex than what lies on the surface of a glossy Hollywood photograph.

In addition to numerous Creative Growth gallery shows, Ying has shown at Fraenkel Gallery and Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco, Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York, and at various art fairs.
