Creative Growth's Annual Holiday Show is a beloved tradition, known for drawing crowds from across the Bay Area and beyond, with lines often stretching around the block. The event will take place at the Creative Growth Art Center, where the space will be magically transformed into a gift-giver's paradise, featuring a stunning array of one-of-a-kind holiday treasures created by the center's talented artists.

Typography has long played a crucial role in communication and has evolved to become an art form in itself. "Text Me" highlights the diverse ways in which artists utilize the written word as a powerful tool to convey emotions, narratives, and social commentary. From bold and experimental letterforms to typography-infused mixed media works, this exhibition presents a dynamic and thought-provoking exploration of the printed word.

Creative Growth Art Center is thrilled to announce the return of their annual Home Show exhibition, showcasing the work of over 50 artists with developmental disabilities. This beloved event celebrates the power of community and the talent of Creative Growth's artists, and will be held from April 27th to June 24th, 2023. The Home Show features a wide range of homewares and artwork, including hand-crafted pillows, woven blankets, ceramics, wood sculptures, dishes, linens and framed work. The exhibition highlights the importance of the home as a space of creativity, comfort, and connection, and showcases the incredible range of talent and skill present in Creative Growth's artist community. The opening night of the exhibition on April 27th promises to be a special evening, filled with stunning artwork and an opportunity to meet the artists and learn more about the creative process behind their work.

DOCENT-LED TOUR
Creative Growth is offering docent-led tours of their new exhibition: The Home Show. This tour is primarily for Blind and low vision visitors. Tony Pedemonte Installation + CG Magazine | Aesop | Jackson Square SF

We are pleased to partner with Aesop in celebrating the new issue of the Creative Growth Magazine. The magazine will be featured at Aesop Jackson Square in San Francisco along with an in-store installation of work by CG artist Tony Pedemonte, on view through September 26. On September 20 at 6:30pm, Aesop will host a panel discussion with Creative Growth Magazine contributors Kathleen Henderson and Matt Haber about the innate desire to create and what this means for Creative Growth as a community art space.

Visit Creative Growth's booth at Untitled, San Francisco where we will feature textile and wearable creations by various Creative Growth artists along with a virtual embroidery workshop, "Common Thread."  This workshop, in the form of a video installation, will highlight textile artists' stitching and embroidery styles, as well as share the creative community of Creative Growth. Fair-goers are encouraged to sit and add their own stitches and embroidery to a growing wall piece, as if they too are sitting at a table in Creative Growth's studio. Creative Growth artists and staff will be on-site on-and-off throughout the weekend to keep the creativity going.

On Saturday, January 14 at 3:30pm Tom Di Maria (Director of Creative Growth Art Center) will lead a discussion with Leigh Markopoulos (Chair of CCA’s Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice), Ben Ospital (Bay Area fashion luminary and co-owner of MAC), and Erica Tanov (Bay Area based fashion and home wear designer) on the intersection of art and fashion and the nature of inspiration.

Untitled is an international, curated art fair founded in 2012 that focuses on curatorial balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. The inaugural edition of Untitled, San Francisco will take place at the historic Pier 70 in the Dogpatch neighborhood.

Judith Scott Featured | Inextricabilia | La Maison Rouge | Paris, France

June 23 - September 17, 2017 At first view, there is nothing that might connect an Art Brut sculpture by Judith Scott with a Nikisi divination statue from Congo, an eighteenth-century German reliquary or Annette Messager's net of votive photographs, and yet despite their origins in different lands, cultures, expressions and eras, there are surprising overlaps in the materials and techniques used, and in the process behind their creation.

All these objects display striking analogies in the entwining, entangling and knotting of hemp cord, hair, strips of leather, gold threads, blades of grass, raffia, rope and fabric.Whether organic, plant or metal, these fibres are ingeniously assembled, stitched, woven or knotted together into inextricable meshes that are also highly symbolic objects. For indeed these resemblances go beyond form and technique: each piece is instilled with healing, purifying or protective powers that will drive away evil, endowing them with a spiritual, religious or magical role. Do their makers believe they will help them communicate with a world beyond the here below?

Each December in Miami, NADA holds a renowned art fair to vigorously pursue our goals of exploring new or underexposed art that is not typical of the “art establishment.” NADA Miami Beach is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world’s youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging contemporary art.

The 14th edition of the fair continues to showcase the best of emerging contemporary art, with exhibitors representing 36 cities from 17 different countries, 43 first-time exhibitors, and 29 project spaces.

NADA Miami Beach is dedicated to showcasing new art and to celebrating the rising talents from around the globe. It is the only major American art fair to be run by a non-profit organization.

Peek inside the wonders of the Creative Growth studio and its print department with the eccentric works on display in The Curiosity Cabinet. Inspired by curiosity cabinets from the past that showcased a hodgepodge of objects, Creative Growth Art Center and its artists present a multidisciplinary body of work that which goes beyond the traditional notion of printmaking and into the unique and untethered, the unusual and extraordinary.

Julie Swartout presents relief prints made using an inked stamp to create dense fields of geometric colors and shapes, while Franna Lusson’s gestural animals showcase her signature hand-drawn style with intaglio printing, where an incision carries the ink. Finally, as in Ricardo Gaitan’s mono-printed painterly fields of color or Shirley Chiu’s delicate swan, printmaking happens in conversation with painting, blurring the line between where one gesture stops and the other begins.

Interwoven and arranged, The Curiosity Cabinet will grow through the weeks with two public programs featuring the boundless possibilities in printmaking and collaborative nature of making. We invite you to join the collection!

Cabinet Workshop #1: Relief Printing, November 4, 5pm – 9pm

During Oakland’s Art Murmur, join Creative Growth printmaking instructor Sara Lankutis to add your own unique creation to our “Curiosity Cabinet” installation using a non-toxic relief printing process.

Free. All ages welcome. No prior experience necessary.

Cabinet Workshop #2: Risograph, November 12, 11am – 3pm

Come discover the Risograph with Ryan Whelan from Pebble Press for another collaborative printmaking event, an opportunity to play with soy-based inks by layering colors and drawings to add something unique to the Curiosity Cabinet wall.

Free. All ages welcome. No prior experience necessary.

POINT-OF-VIEW | Valerie Tribble: Upstairs in our Viewing Room gallery, we highlight the work of Valerie Tribble, whose own “curiosity cabinet” of painted odds and ends resides in a hidden drawer of a work table, plucked from the Studio’s wood shop for this installation. This special look inside reveals Valerie’s penchant for graphic patterns and ironic reinvention of the mundane.

Creative Growth Artists Featured | Duvel Moortgat Fund | Madmusée | Liège, Belgium

In 2014, the Madmusée exhibited at Intuit in Chicago (USA). This exhibition marks the beginning of a unique partnership with the brewery Duvel Moortgat: During 3 years, the brewery group will support the acquisition policy of the museum in the United States. These acquisitions gave birth to the Duvel Moortgat Fund, a remarkable collection which currently has some 275 works produced by people with learning disabilities in American workshops. Included in this collection are works by the following Creative Growth artists:

John Hiltunen | Valegro | Slide Space 123 | Mills College | Oakland, CA

November 3- December 2, 2016 What are the bonds that exist between man and animal; the closeness and kinship that exist across species – between a human and a pet, animals worked with in labor and sport? Valegro will explore these kinships and how humans and animals live with and use each other, how we cope with the world together at the intersection of empathy and projection. Work by Benjamin Ashlock, Beatriz Balanta & Mary Walling Blackburn, John Hiltunen, Sarah McMenimen, John Russell,  and Jess Smith.

Slide Space 123: A Space for Art and Ideas is a new gallery at Mills College that aims to provide a space to pose new problems, working with and against the grain of the exhibition format. Slide Space 123 is a site to exchange ideas and for conversations, a venue to connect the Mills community (students, faculty, and alumnae) with currents across multiple disciplines.
