BEYOND I WANNA GO A film by Cheryl Dunn
BEYOND i wanna go is a documentary by filmmaker Cheryl Dunn commemorating 10 years of Creative Growth’s annual Beyond Trend runway show and fundraiser. The film features historic footage of Creative Growth artists on the runway and backstage over the past decade, captures the dynamic growth of the event and takes a compelling look at the importance of Beyond Trend to the lives and identities of the artists.
My film career has predominantly been making documentaries about artists. One thing I have tried to do with all my films is have the artists themselves speak about their work, not someone else’s commentary. I had never before had the opportunity to do this in any deep way with the Creative Growth artists. So, for this project we shot the CG team and the making of their amazing short film and then we set up a DIY sound stage upstairs and interviewed 61 artists.
It was thrilling to film the beautiful physicality of signing, to look into the artist's eyes face to face and share remembrances and thoughts on art and inspiration.
This film is a small glimpse into Beyond Trend and a small window into Creative Growth. A film is a portal into a world, it can not tell you everything but it can hopefully inspire you to go further and learn more. I have been documenting at Creative Growth for nearly 20 years in the hopes of telling the larger story and the amazing stories that orbit around it. Being able to make this film has been incredibly insightful and inspiring and allowed me to go deep.
