A devotee of pop culture, Christine Szeto embroiders song titles, lyrics, or quotes from movies in English and Cantonese on her quilts and clothing. Such disparate sources as Eminem, High School Musical, Juicy J, and Frozen are immortalized under Szeto’s hand. Sometimes reading like one-to-one translations, and sometimes appearing as a synthesis of language, her inventive technique is a celebration of blended cultures. Joyful in their presentation, Szeto’s quilts are as expressive as their maker, and patches with embroidered drawings or colorful crochet sometimes break up her text. Portraits and motifs of animals and flowers are accomplished in her thin descriptive line, and she often embroiders over top of her work on paper.

Christine’s work is part of the permanent collection of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.
