The Creative Growth Youth Program is offered from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays to young adults ages 16-22 with developmental disabilities. It gives high school students with artistic inclinations the opportunity to explore art with the possibility of transitioning into the Creative Growth adult program.

Terri Bowden Featured | Sheer Fantasy | Campbelltown Arts Centre, Australia

A printed wallpaper by Creative Growth artist Terri Bowden was commissioned for and featured in Sheer Fantasy at Campbelltown Arts Centre in Australia. Curated by Western Sydney artist, David Capra, Sheer Fantasy suspends time to confront the role of the fantastical and how it plays within our collective conscious. In this exhibition, the world as we know it bends and shifts, making room to indulge in our greatest fantasies.

The exhibition includes a number of newly commissioned works, where artists have contemplated private and internal landscapes that have long influenced their practice. Manifested in bold architectural additions to the gallery spaces, these backdrops provide an immersive experience of constructed escapisms that are strangely familiar; referencing movie sets of Hollywood Westerns, candy-coloured theme parks and fanciful theatrics. Nostalgic tropes surrounding the notion of make-believe are questioned, loosened and pulled apart, allowing the imagination to run free.

Gail Lewis featured | Soft Bytes animation festival | Los Angeles

Animations by Gail Lewis and former Creative Growth artists Maria Bustillos and Bre-esha Wynn will be screened at Soft Bytes, a female and feminist identified animation festival, held at TSALA on May 19th at 7:30pm by the Association of Hysteric Curators.

From the Association of Hysteric Curators: This event is a product of our community by way of an open call for 1 minute or less videos and curated works by AHC. Using Lucy Lippard’s “moving targets” as a theoretical starting point, our screening emphasizes intersectionality, a non-ableist and a democratized vision of our virtual selves.

Soft Bytes considers the various ways our artists have encoded the habitual, reimagined myths, bodies and blurred reality within the realm of experimental animations, GIFs and VR. Our event includes an interactive video game by Yasmine Batniji and AR installation by Feminist Pornographic Collective Consciousness (Echo Theohar, Xin Xin). One of the objectives of the ONCE Foundation since its creation 30 years ago is to achieve the full inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of life. The ONCE Foundation focuses a large part of its efforts on the labor insertion of people with disabilities, being aware that other areas such as culture cannot be forgotten in order to achieve total normalization in the lives of the people who make up this group.

For this reason, the ONCE Foundation organized in Madrid in 2006 the 1st International Biennial of Art ONCE Foundation, with the primary objective of recognizing and disseminating the work of artists with some type of disability, as well as enhancing their access and participation in the art market.

But it was also intended to evoke the attention of the world of culture and art about the reality of the world of disability and its enormous potential. Due to the success obtained in the first edition of its International Biennial, the ONCE Foundation once again committed to the organization new editions and, with the aim of continuing with the foreseen objectives and improving the results of the previous editions, poses the VII International Biennial of Contemporary Art from May to September 2018.

Visual Oasis: Work from Creative Growth | Capital City Arts Initiative | Carson City, NV

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] presents its group show, Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth, at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host an opening reception on Friday, June 1, 5-7pm. The exhibition with art by 17 artists will be in the gallery from June 1 – September 27, 2018. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

In a celebration of all Creative Growth artists, our next exhibition EVERYONE will include over 150 works of art made by each artist currently working in the studio. This is an opportunity to see work by artists that are rarely exhibited in the Oakland gallery, and a time to show your excitement and support of our mission to provide a professional studio environment for adults with disabilities. Artwork from Creative Growth’s Saturday Youth Program will also be included.

Since its founding in 1974 by Florence Ludins-Katz and Dr. Elias Katz, Creative Growth’s mission has been driven by the idea that creativity is vital to every individual. By providing a professional studio, gallery exhibition, and representation for artists with disabilities, Creative Growth offers the environment and support for artists to develop and realize their unique form of self-expression. EVERYONE embodies this philosophy. Work by every artist currently making paintings, drawings, textiles, ceramics, digital art, wood sculptures, and mixed media in the Creative Growth studio is represented in a salon style presentation, highlighting the exceptional range of creative visions, expressions, talents, and styles of Creative Growth artists.

Creative Growth begins the New Year with an exhibition of work that brings alternate realities to life. Explore the landscapes of Meyshe Benyomen Shapiro-Nygren’s warring galaxies, Chris Corr-Barberis’ cryptic drawings of the “Real” and “Unreal,” and Rickie Algarva’s worlds, filled with surreal and mythological creatures. Nicole Storm brings her prolific practice to the gallery with an artist-curated section of the exhibition; her prophetic thoughts and observations, looped into abstractions in her pink and purple washes of paint, are worlds onto their own. At times, there is a sense of artists willing fantasy into truth, such as Aurie Ramirez’s repetitive, dreamlike characters and William Scott’s paintings of re-imagined housing projects, the deceased returning to earth as benevolent aliens, and depictions of William’s own life filled with the love and peace he longs for.

Concurrent with the opening of An Other Life is the release of Creative Growth’s new book, Painting Utopia - a retrospective of William’s Scott’s career and creative process. William is a long-standing and treasured artist at Creative Growth and has spent the past 25 years developing a meticulous drawing and painting style that explores an alternative past, present, and future. William will be signing books and speaking first-hand about his work beginning at 6:30pm on Thursday, January 25.

On the Ramp: Terri Bowden
Terri Bowden’s otherworldly drawings of celebrities and animals re-imagined as albino and rendered with nuanced expression will join her impressionistic beachscapes and neon portraits of punk rockers in a presentation of the artist’s work on paper.

Andrew Edlin Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition for Dan Miller, his first with the gallery. Dan Miller (b. 1961, Castro Valley, CA) spends the majority of each day drawing, painting, typing, or otherwise rendering a dizzying array of letters and numbers into layered abstractions. Names of objects, food items, cities, friends, family members, and other details of life inhabit his works, but their legibility is almost always completely obliterated by the artist’s obsessive overlapping of words. In 2010, Time Out New York’s Ann Doran wrote, “Miller’s astonishing works fuse compulsive documentation with gestural abstraction, their autobiographical content dispersed, like sand in water, in a nonobjective field.”

Miller, who is autistic, is a twenty-five-year veteran of Oakland’s Creative Growth Art Center, the country’s most renowned non-profit serving artists with disabilities. He is the most renowned living artist at Creative Growth, whose roster includes internationally known figures like William Scott (b.1964), Judith Scott (1943-2005) and Dwight MacKintosh (1906-1999).

While the self-taught Miller has been known almost exclusively for his drawings in ink and acrylic on paper, more recently he has expanded his use of materials to include ceramics, textiles, and wood. Miller has also decidedly gone bigger in the period leading up to and after the 2017 Venice Biennale for which curator Christine Macel selected his work for the central exhibition “Viva Arte Viva.” Some of Miller’s compositions have become almost monumental, measuring over twelve feet tall.

Dan Miller’s work is included in the permanent collections of the American Folk Art Museum, New York, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Collection de L’Art Brut, Lausanne, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, CT, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC. In 2007, his work was included in the seminal show “Glossolalia” at MoMA, NY, curated by Connie Butler. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums including, in New York, at White Columns, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise and Ricco Maresca Gallery. Other exhibitions have occurred at Diane Rosenstein Gallery, Los Angeles, Yukiko Koide Presents, Tokyo, Galerie Christian Berst, Paris, Collection abcd, Paris, and the Museum of Everything, London.

In 2015, Miller received the Wyn Newhouse award, an annual grant for artists with disabilities. We extend our thanks to Tom Di Maria and Creative Growth for their cooperation and support.

Judith Scott featured | Touchdown | Zentrum Paul Klee | Bern, Switzerland

TOUCHDOWN is curated by an interdisciplinary team of academics and is actively supported and co-curated by people with Down’s syndrome. Embedded in a larger research project (www.touchdown21.info), this exhibition aims to tell the history of Down's syndrome in an interdisciplinary and experimental way. The topic embraces disciplines like archaeology, ancient and contemporary history, sociology, medicine and genetics as well as art, film and literature. Besides ongoing controversies in society and current scientific problems, this exhibition will especially focus on the complex history of a relationship: how and where do “our” and “their” worlds “touch” each other? This exhibition includes work by Creative Growth artist Judith Scott.
