Creative Growth is pleased to announce Nicole Storm’s exhibition at White Columns, New York. It is the first site-specific installation by a Creative Growth artist in another gallery, which Storm completed in person the week prior to the opening.

Nicole Storm (b. 1967) has been developing her practice at Creative Growth for 25 years. For Storm, the process of creation is paramount to a finished piece, and her work usually has several stages of finality. While painting, Storm walks the building, rides the elevator, and ducks into corners, carrying the piece around as she adds layers and detail. This is a key component of her process, and it functions as a way for her to harvest visual information and process ideas. Storm favors vibrant hues and likes to incorporate many layers of washes under and over her ‘notes,’ composed of free-associative thoughts and observations. The installation of Storm’s own work is as integral to her creative process as the individual pieces. Storm uses every surface of the gallery as a canvas, which becomes an enormous collage that continues to evolve by adding new work, returning to older pieces, and painting directly on the walls to weave her presentation together.

What emerged was an immersive installation that spanned the height of the walls, spread across the floor, hung from the lighting grid, and seemed to gain momentum as time went on. It was the day she began using her installation as a workspace that we all felt we had witnessed something profound.
