In early October 2019, we welcomed guests and colleagues from across the U.S. to Creative Growth for the “Advancing our Communities” symposium. This 4-day intensive workshop explored topics central to the arts and disability community, allowing us to learn from each other, exchange ideas, and prepare for future challenges in our field. We started with a tour of NIAD in Richmond, followed by a hands-on day in the Creative Growth Studio, where our staff and artists were able to share their work and learn about programs at other centers. Over the next few days, we discussed important topics such as setting up exhibitions and curatorial concerns, along with disability aesthetics and access infrastructure. We also invited professionals from related fields to speak to us about corporate partnerships, artist payments, and intellectual property laws.
We look forward to continuing and expanding this important dialogue and finding ways to connect again in the future.
