Peek inside the wonders of the Creative Growth studio and its print department with the eccentric works on display in The Curiosity Cabinet. Inspired by curiosity cabinets from the past that showcased a hodgepodge of objects, Creative Growth Art Center and its artists present a multidisciplinary body of work that which goes beyond the traditional notion of printmaking and into the unique and untethered, the unusual and extraordinary.
Julie Swartout presents relief prints made using an inked stamp to create dense fields of geometric colors and shapes, while Franna Lusson’s gestural animals showcase her signature hand-drawn style with intaglio printing, where an incision carries the ink. Finally, as in Ricardo Gaitan’s mono-printed painterly fields of color or Shirley Chiu’s delicate swan, printmaking happens in conversation with painting, blurring the line between where one gesture stops and the other begins.
Interwoven and arranged, The Curiosity Cabinet will grow through the weeks with two public programs featuring the boundless possibilities in printmaking and collaborative nature of making. We invite you to join the collection!
Cabinet Workshop #1: Relief Printing, November 4, 5pm – 9pm
During Oakland’s Art Murmur, join Creative Growth printmaking instructor Sara Lankutis to add your own unique creation to our “Curiosity Cabinet” installation using a non-toxic relief printing process.
Free. All ages welcome. No prior experience necessary.
Cabinet Workshop #2: Risograph, November 12, 11am – 3pm
Come discover the Risograph with Ryan Whelan from Pebble Press for another collaborative printmaking event, an opportunity to play with soy-based inks by layering colors and drawings to add something unique to the Curiosity Cabinet wall.

POINT-OF-VIEW | Valerie Tribble: Upstairs in our Viewing Room gallery, we highlight the work of Valerie Tribble, whose own “curiosity cabinet” of painted odds and ends resides in a hidden drawer of a work table, plucked from the Studio’s wood shop for this installation. This special look inside reveals Valerie’s penchant for graphic patterns and ironic reinvention of the mundane.
