Tony Pedemonte 2021 Wynn Newhouse recipient
March 14, 2021
In collaboration with Cavin-Morris Gallery, Creative Growth is proud to announce that Tony Pedemonte is a recipient of the 2021 Wynn Newhouse Award, granted by the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation to visual artists of excellence who happen to have disabilities. Pedemonte is the fourth artist from Creative Growth who has received this award, along with Dan Miller, William Scott, and Kerry Damianakes. Pedemonte creates armatures of wood and reclaimed materials that wrapped with layers of yarn and thread. His sculptures are distinguished by their smooth textures, monochromatic palettes, and geometric configurations that often reveal the work's interior through complex webs that are left open in its fibrous layers.
From Randall Morris of Cavin-Morris:
βFor me, Tony Pedemonte speaks in the language of wrapping, which has many more dimensions than people realize. It can be culturally spiritual, magical, psychological, and mysterious. His wrapping combines a dramatic color sense coupled with the performance of the act of wrapping itself. It is his dance. The result is not as important as the physical doing of the piece. His threads are drawn lines of tension and beauty.β
