The group exhibit Undercover Genius: The Creative Lives of Artists with Disabilities at the Petaluma Arts Center features a wide variety of dynamic art from artists attending the creative programs at Creative Growth, Cedars of Marin in Ross, the NIAD Art Center in Richmond, and Creativity Explored in San Francisco. Artists from Creative Growth include John Martin, Tony Pedemonte, Aurie Ramirez, Donald Mitchell, Terri Bowden, and Dan Miller, William Tyler, and Chuck Nagle.

Curators Janet Moore and Geri Olson also selected art from two Petaluma studios (Alchemia and The Open Studio at OADS and Becoming Independent in Santa Rosa) as well as individual artists Zoe Petersen and Monique Harris. Works include painting, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, prints, and mixed media.

Creative Growth at the Sonoma County Museum

Margins To Mainstream: Contemporary Artists With Disabilities June 15 - September 15

The Sonoma County Museum features the work of 19 Creative Growth artists, in addition to two Korean artists: Minseo Cho, who attends Able Art in Korea and Kwak ku Seob, an artist from Korea's Raw+Side center.  Artists Donald Mitchell, Dan Miller, Luis Aguilera, Erin Punzel, John Martin, William Tyler, and Carlos Perez are among the Creative Growth artists included, showing a diverse range in media from works on paper to fiber to ceramic and wood.

This exhibition has its basis in an exhibit entitled Different and Special, which Creative Growth was largely featured in at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (GMoMA) in Ansan, South Korea from August through October 2012. GMoMA is a partner museum with the Sonoma County Museum working together on the North-South Museums Connect grant program. In Different and Special, the work of Creative Growth artists was shown alongside several Korean artists with disabilities from Raw+Side and the Able Art Center in Korea, and the Tanpopo-no-ye Art Center in Hana, Japan. A selection of Creative Growth artwork that was originally presented in the GMoMA show will be on display at the Sonoma County Museum, along with newer three-dimensional artwork from other emerging artists at Creative Growth.

Organized in collaboration with independent curator Patricia Watts, the Marin Community Foundation hosts Breaking Barriers: Bay Area Artists with Disabilities, a large scale exhibition featuring approximately 130 artworks from six Bay Area arts programs serving artists with disabilities. Creative Growth Art Center joins Becoming Independent in Santa Rosa, Brain Injury Network in Larkspur, Creativity Explored in San Francisco, NIAD Art Center in Richmond, and The Cedars of Marin in Ross in this comprehensive look at artists whose talent clearly challenges, if not surpasses, the tired conventions dictated by the contemporary art world.

Featuring Creative Growth artists Barry Regan, Carlos Perez, Dan Miller, Kerry Damianakes, Merritt Wallace, and William Scott.

40 Years: New Work By Dan Miller & William Scott

Presenting new works by two of the Studio’s acclaimed artists, Dan Miller and William Scott.

May 9, 2013—Oakland's Creative Growth Art Center is pleased to announce: 40 Years: New Work by Dan Miller and William Scott. On view from  June 6 – July 25, 2013.

Creative Growth, the world's oldest and largest center for artists with disabilities, launches a year long celebration of its 40th anniversary, presenting new works by two of the studio’s most acclaimed artists, Dan Miller and William Scott.

Miller and Scott have each been widely collected within the contemporary art world, in addition to the honor of having their respective work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Creative Growth director, Tom di Maria shares, "Dan Miller and William Scott continue to personify Creative Growth’s mission of supporting artists with disabilities to reach the highest level of artistic achievement, it is with much veneration that we exhibit their work in our Oakland gallery."

The Creative Growth gallery will present new paintings on canvas, by William Scott alongside a new body of ceramic work and large-scale drawings and paintings by Dan Miller.

Also on view: As part of a tradition of introducing artists with disabilities from outside the Bay Area, Creative Growth debuts new work from Cincinnati-based Thunder Sky studio. This exhibtion will feature Thunder Sky artists Antonio Adams and Marc Lambert.  Adams artwork interprets society and current events, while Lambert creates evocative visions of the future via his paintings on found acoustic tile.

Director Tom di Maria will present a 'members preview' exhibition walk-through on Thursday, June 6, at 11:30AM.

Alternative Guide To The UniverseCurated by Ralph Rugoff

Presented by the Hayward Gallery at London's Southbank Centre, Alternative Guide to the Universe surveys an artistic landscape that stretches to the far horizons of our imagination. Featuring contributions from self-taught artists and unlicensed architects, fringe physicists and visionary inventors, it serves up bracingly fresh perspectives on the world we live in. It also offers a rare opportunity to discover remarkable paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and architectural models created by an eccentric and inspiring group of individuals from around the world.

Creative Growth artist William Scott is among 25 contributors to the exhibition who explore fictional identities and design imaginary cities, build healing machines and record the unseen energy flows of our bodies. They speculate on mysteries of time and space; create devices for time travel and communication with other dimensions; and fashion new letter forms designed to liberate the alphabet from the strictures of Western civilization.

Taken together, their work conjures a kind of a parallel universe where ingenuity and inventiveness trump common sense and received wisdom.

Spring is here, and with it come vibrant patterns and hues, fresh fashion, and inspired creation. Join us for this year’s Home show, Pattern Response, and take a look at how Creative Growth artists explore the concept of pattern in a multifaceted way. Whether serving as a mediation of nature, a form of communication, or a blueprint for an object or piece of clothing, an artist’s response to pattern can reveal a lot about the individual’s aesthetic sensibility and how the underlying structures existing within the artist’s oeuvre can repeat across different media.

Kick off an exciting weekend of events with this much-anticipated annual exhibition, a favorite for Bay Area art collectors for more than 20 years. Featuring functional art objects and original works on paper by artists Dan Miller, Donald Mitchell, Charles Esseltine, Tony Pedemonte, Franna Lusson, Erin Punzel and more. The three-day event series continues with a special dinner and live performance in the studio during Friday’s Art Murmur, followed by the return of the Beyond Trend Runway Event & Fundraiser on Saturday celebrating the diverse visions from paper to the catwalk through the latest wearables made by Creative Growth artists.

As part of a semester-long series of exhibitions and related programming presenting an array of approaches taken by contemporary artists to push the boundaries of drawing, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum will feature the work of Creative Growth artists Dan Miller and Judith Scott in a two-person exhibition curated by British artist, curator, writer, and publisher Matthew Higgs.

Other solo projects presented include Amelie Chabannes, Harry Dodge, Robert Longo, and Jane South. The exhibitions will focus on those whose practice has taken the pursuit of drawing to extremes, addressing issues of scale, material, content, gesture, emotion, and individual circumstance.

In partnership with the San Francisco Art Institute, Creative Growth Art Center presents Convergence: SFAI and Creative Growth, a special one-week-only exhibition curated by SFAI graduate students who have been involved with writing a publication about Creative Growth and its artists over the past semester.

Drawing upon themes from their essays, this show will highlight the commonalities that ultimately emerged---memory, desire, and fantasy---during SFAI students' research and independent visits to the Creative Growth studio. Each student focused on a certain aspect of the organization and its artists for the written project, spanning everything from topics about the evolution of the Video Production Workshop to the use of sexual content in certain artists' work. The pieces on view in the gallery will comprise the visual counterpart to the writings---an aesthetic summary that provides insight to the multi-faceted exploration of Creative Growth realized in the SFAI publication to come.

The SFAI/Creative Growth alliance continues across the bridge in a parallel exhibition at the Diego Rivera Gallery on SFAI's campus, opening April 23, 2013. Translating ideas about collaborative art-making and notions of "home" through the artistic lens of the artists at Creative Growth, Almost Home extends the dialogue begun by the first SFAI-curated exhibition, Convergence, and invites the SFAI community to respond.

Creative Growth artist Aurie Ramirez is included in a group show at contemporary art space, Y Gallery in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

Curated by Y Gallery Director Aldo Sánchez, Metal Coyote brings together work that,  "looks at the way musical culture is absorbed, interpreted and redone in other latitudes. Coyote as a U.S.A. and Mexican icon. Figure present in the rock´n roll imagery. Metal as a creaking sound, like a fork against a knife."

Los Jaichackers, Juan Luna Avín, Eamon Ore Giron and Julio Morales rummage in the streets and street markets to see what is behind the music industry as we know it. Aurie Ramírez´ own interpretation of the band Kiss is ludic and lead us to a world inhabited by this androgynous glam characters. A different world is created by Brad Kahlhamer but this one recall a peyote trip, oniric figures around desertic landscape. As a musician, we are also presenting Kahlhamer´s latest music video. The Perro callejero series by Moris is composed by these intriguing sculptures made out of rubber, studs and spikes that appear to be garments but they happen to be unwearable. Ornamentation, distinctiveness and defensiveness within urban groups. For over four decades, Cal Schenkel has done drawings and paintings for numerous album covers, mainly for Frank Zappa and his bands that has become legendary such as We Are Only In It For The Money, among many others. Legendary music producer, manager and artist, Arturo Vega has accomplished an extensive body of work. For Metal Coyote, Vega created this installation that resume his thoughts on the rock´n roll scene after devoting his life to it for more than 40 years. Vega is the mind behind The Ramones and the creator of the most reproduced musical band logo worldwide.

Creative Growth Art Center, the world’s oldest and largest studio and gallery for artists with disabilities, invites you to kick off the New Year with an exhibition that navigates the often shifting boundaries that define a space. 

Between Spaces surveys the physical environment, as well as the social environment that exists within the minds of the artists working at Creative Growth. From highly organized renderings of urban and domestic space to abstract representations of psychological space, Creative Growth artists manifest interpretations of the places we occupy in reality and those we can only imagine.

Studio artist George Wilson engulfs his subjects in a tangled ink shroud of lines or colorful negative space, while Laura Jo Pierce lays thoughts and actions as text across stitched together maps. Merritt Wallace melds blueprints and absurd schematics into futuristic vessels and Maria Bustillos collages domestic interiors in clever and dizzying perspectives.

The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, in collaboration with curator Alison Gingeras and artist Jonathan Horowitz, presents We the People, which provides an artistic view of the diverse demographics of our country, in contrast to the taglines and catchphrases of the 2012 election. We the People will run from October 3 through November 9, to coincide with the 2012 presidential election, and will take a close look at who the American people are, as seen through 68 different artists' eyes.

We the People will create a diorama of the American populace using strategically chosen examples of figurative painting, sculpture, and photography. Works from American artists of older generations―including Romare Bearden, George Segal, Margaret Bourke-White, Alice Neel, Duane Hanson, Alex Katz, and Robert Rauschenberg—will be installed in cacophonous dialogue with works by a younger generation of artists—Tina Barney, Fred Wilson, Elizabeth Peyton, Barkley L. Hendricks, Nicole Eisenman, and Danny McDonald.  This exhibition includes work by Creative Growth artist William Scott as well as new pieces made for the show by artists Nate Lowman, Julio Cesar Morales, Richard Phillips and Swoon.
