August 29—Oakland’s Creative Growth Art Center is pleased to announce: Recto Verso.  On view from September 19-November 7, 2013. 

Creative Growth, the oldest and largest art studio for artists with disabilities introduces Recto Verso, an exhibition centered around the artist book. This exhibition highlights the book as conceptual object and traditional folio, also including a group of narrative works on paper.

Given the often prolific output by many Creative Growth artists, the production of a multi-paged collection of work has become a consistent pursuit. Bound collective works on view during this exhibition include the psychedelic renderings of Rickie Algarva, the infinite variation of Aurie Ramirez’ fantasy figures, and the abstracted pointillism of Maureen Clay. When viewed in sequence this work reveals a tenacious exploration of form and composition. Books serve as interactive sculpture providing intimate views and juxtapositions of the bound images. Artists John Martin, Dan Miller, and Allan Lofberg make marks directly on found text and image, an act that conveys the spontaneity of their imagination and in Martin’s case, a comical irreverence for printed imagery and text.

Visitors are invited to sit within the Gallery’s “reading room” where one can thumb through artist Gerone Spruill’s much-anticipated Chocolate City of Oakland comic along with other new works by the artists at Creative Growth.

Join Creative Growth on Thursday, September 19 for an afternoon members’ preview followed by a public evening event with music and drinks. Gallery Manager, Catherine Nguyen will present an exhibition walk-through on Thursday, September 19, at 11:30AM, along with a ‘reading circle’ with participating artists/authors.

Institute 193, Kentucky Presents Works by John Martin

Creative Growth artist, John Martin featured in solo exhibition in Lexington, Kentucky:Multi-tools--on view from September 5 to October 5, 2013

Mississippi native, John Martin assembles his sculptures from wood scraps that he covers in thick layers of bright paint. For this exhibition, the works depict men, animals and automobiles configured into folding shapes that often resemble a Leatherman tool or swiss army knife.

Founded in 2009, by Philip March Jones, Institute 193 embraces the notion that groundbreaking contemporary art can and does emerge outside of large metropolitan centers.

40 Years: Departures On view from August 2 – September 12, 2013

As the oldest and largest studio in the world for adult artists wtih disabilities, and currently supporting well over one-hundred artists within its program, Creative Growth has witnessed the sometimes decades long process of an artist uncovering their personal style.

As part of an ongoing 40th anniversary exhibition series, Departures celebrates the unrelenting evolution of the artwork emerging from the Oakland studio.

Presenting new work from Creative Growth artists who after many years, or sometimes just months in the studio, have expanded their use of materials or taken a departure from their established working style.

For artists Donald Mitchell and Maureen Clay, a shift in scale and from working on paper to painting on canvas has unveiled an acuity that magnifies the depth of their abstracted works. Lauren Dare and Monica Valentine—the newest artists represented in this group—take on discarded, irregular wood cutouts creating layered assemblages that stack in a seemingly serendipitous order.

Join Creative Growth on Friday, August 2nd, for a public opening with live music, drinks and Art Murmur, an evening art walk in and around Oakland's Uptown neighborhood.

Create Exhibition Moves to BOCA Museum of Art, Florida

Create is a major group exhibition presenting a selection of the most important works created over the past 20 years by artists involved with three pioneering non-profit organizations: Creativity Explored, Creative Growth Art Center and the National Institute for Art and Disabilities Art Center (NIAD). These organizations were founded with the belief that exceptional creativity can emerge in anyone, and they support the work of artists with developmental disabilities through a unique and highly successful approach to group studio practice. The centers offer an experience that is, in many ways, the antithesis of that envisioned by the art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 when he coined the term “outsider art” to identify the work of artists who have no contact with the art world and who are physically and/or mentally isolated.This major survey exhibition brings well-deserved attention to this compelling work, sharing it with a broad audience and expanding on its impact on a range of renowned international artists. Create sparks critical dialogue concerning the categories of contemporary art practice, especially the notion of “outsider art,” and challenges audiences to rethink the limitations of such categories. It is clear why works by these artists have been increasingly recognized as a significant contribution to the field of contemporary art, both nationally and internationally, among artists, curators, critics and collectors, as well as the broader cultural community, and are now in the permanent collections of artists such as Cindy Sherman, Jeremy Deller, Chris Offili and Peter Doig, and in prominent institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.Create presents a range of exceptional works in diverse media by twenty artists who have produced artworks at these centers over the past 20 years. Among the artists included are Judith Scott, William Scott, John Patrick McKenzie, Evelyn Reyes and Dan Miller. Each artist has sustained an art-making practice at the highest level for many years, and the range of their work is extraordinary: Judith Scott’s visceral sculpture utilizes found materials wrapped in knotted yarn or string; William Scott’s humorous paintings incorporate sardonic urban motifs; John Patrick McKenzie’s lyrical work employs the repetition of text drawn from pop culture, current events and his immediate surroundings; Evelyn Reyes’s pastel drawings feature bold, minimalistic shapes; and Dan Miller’s intricate work includes drawings and paintings incorporating layered text.

Creative Growth at the Petaluma Arts Center

Undercover GeniusCurated by Geri Olson and Jan Moore

The group exhibit Undercover Genius: The Creative Lives of Artists with Disabilities at the Petaluma Arts Center features a wide variety of dynamic art from artists attending the creative programs at Creative Growth, Cedars of Marin in Ross, the NIAD Art Center in Richmond, and Creativity Explored in San Francisco. Artists from Creative Growth include John Martin, Tony Pedemonte, Aurie Ramirez, Donald Mitchell, Terri Bowden, and Dan Miller, William Tyler, and Chuck Nagle.

Curators Janet Moore and Geri Olson also selected art from two Petaluma studios (Alchemia and The Open Studio at OADS and Becoming Independent in Santa Rosa) as well as individual artists Zoe Petersen and Monique Harris. Works include painting, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, prints, and mixed media.

Artifacts | Cats, the New Rulers of the Art World By Linda Yablonsky

The Cat Show continues through July 27. 

When it comes to art, cats are like the second sex. What is the feline equivalent of Jeff Koons’s giant flowering “Puppy?” Where is the painting of a snarling tabby to counter Francis Bacon’s feral mutt? Are fluffy cats not worthy of the same serious treatment as Edwin Landseer’s regal hounds or David Hockney’s beloved pooches? Who is the William Wegman of the whisker set?

At long last, a correction is upon us. You can hear it in the piercing meows that emanate from one of the artworks at “The Cat Show,” a no-claws-barred group exhibition at the nonprofit White Columns gallery. And you can see it in more than 50 examples of cat portraiture executed in every possible medium (including the holographic) by artists that include both heavy hitters like Andy Warhol, Richard Prince and Elizabeth Peyton and lesser-known but notable talents like the aptly named Siobhan Meow, a transvestite whose work incorporates her own pets’ feces, and John Hiltunen, a mentally disabled artist who makes priceless collages of cats as fashion plates.

Organized by the art critic and self-professed cat lady Rhonda Lieberman with the White Columns director Matthew Higgs, the show handily elevates kitty art above kitsch, while also pulling heartstrings. The entryway displays mug shots of adorable pets whose owners have died or abandoned them. They were not originally intended as works of art. They’re culled from a 2007 public service campaign by Animal Care & Control of New York City, there to signal Lieberman’s not-so-secret ulterior motive, which is to save forgotten pets from being euthanized.

Lieberman’s heart is in the ingenious, art-appointed cat habitat at the center of the gallery, designed by the Freecell architects John Hartman and Lauren Crahan with Gia Wolff. On weekends during the run of the show, live kittens up for adoption from Social Tees Animal Rescue pull on a dangling calico mobile by the sculptor Lucky DeBellevue, climb into a colossal litter box by Rob Pruitt, lie on cat mats by Ruth Root and scratch at palettes constructed by the artist Joe Scanlan with vintage, limited-edition geometric carpeting by Gerhard Richter. (These and the other works in the habitat are for sale to benefit the rescue group.)

“The original idea for the show was really only the habitat, to create a place for the cats to hang out,” said Lieberman, who is currently “holding steady” with just two cats at home. “Matthew wanted to have more pictorial things that weren’t necessarily just for cats, so the show got very aesthetic, but it’s really more of a social sculpture that uses art as a conduit for rescue.”

It works. The Warhol, a line drawing from the 1950s, depicts cat fur as if it were curled and mascaraed eyelashes. Prince’s collage features a pulp book cover with a babelicious pinup. A suite of watercolors by Ann Craven catches a litter of kittens seemingly at birth. A photograph of a spectacular white Persian by Michele Abeles hangs beside “the last picture” that Eileen Quinlan took of her aging black tabby. Magdalena Frimkess’s striped ceramic cat adds a touch of folk art genius. Frances Stark seems to have spent much of the last 15 years making videos of the cat in her studio. The filmmaker Gus Van Sant did the same, with guitar accompaniment, in a 1989 home movie. Cory Arcangel mashes up YouTube videos of cats creditably tickling the ivories of their owners’ pianos. Mark Leckey soulfully captures the spirit of the enterprise with an animated cat tail that wags with the hypnotic rhythm of a metronome.

“I’ve been trying to make this happen since 1999,” Lieberman said. “It’s a huge saga, kind of poignant now.” And, as she likes to say, kind of purr-fect.

Creative Growth at the Sonoma County Museum

Margins To Mainstream: Contemporary Artists With Disabilities June 15 - September 15

The Sonoma County Museum features the work of 19 Creative Growth artists, in addition to two Korean artists: Minseo Cho, who attends Able Art in Korea and Kwak ku Seob, an artist from Korea's Raw+Side center.  Artists Donald Mitchell, Dan Miller, Luis Aguilera, Erin Punzel, John Martin, William Tyler, and Carlos Perez are among the Creative Growth artists included, showing a diverse range in media from works on paper to fiber to ceramic and wood.

This exhibition has its basis in an exhibit entitled Different and Special, which Creative Growth was largely featured in at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (GMoMA) in Ansan, South Korea from August through October 2012. GMoMA is a partner museum with the Sonoma County Museum working together on the North-South Museums Connect grant program. In Different and Special, the work of Creative Growth artists was shown alongside several Korean artists with disabilities from Raw+Side and the Able Art Center in Korea, and the Tanpopo-no-ye Art Center in Hana, Japan. A selection of Creative Growth artwork that was originally presented in the GMoMA show will be on display at the Sonoma County Museum, along with newer three-dimensional artwork from other emerging artists at Creative Growth.

Breaking Barriers: Bay Area Artists With DisabilitiesCurated by Patricia Watts

Organized in collaboration with independent curator Patricia Watts, the Marin Community Foundation hosts Breaking Barriers: Bay Area Artists with Disabilities, a large scale exhibition featuring approximately 130 artworks from six Bay Area arts programs serving artists with disabilities. Creative Growth Art Center joins Becoming Independent in Santa Rosa, Brain Injury Network in Larkspur, Creativity Explored in San Francisco, NIAD Art Center in Richmond, and The Cedars of Marin in Ross in this comprehensive look at artists whose talent clearly challenges, if not surpasses, the tired conventions dictated by the contemporary art world.

Featuring Creative Growth artists Barry Regan, Carlos Perez, Dan Miller, Kerry Damianakes, Merritt Wallace, and William Scott.

Creative Growth x Erica Tanov Collaboration Featured in Martha Stewart

Clothing designer Erica Tanov is a busy lady these days. Our duly appointed Tastemaker in the June issue of “Living” is a mother of two and the brains behind a freshly launched home collection (hitting stores at the end of the month). We got to tour her colorful Berkeley pad.

Tanov in the doorway of her home, built in 1930. She’s filled it top to bottom mainly with secondhand items, unique flea-market finds, and furniture and textiles from adventures abroad.

Her shirt, like many items in her line, uses art by students of the Oakland-based nonprofit Creative Growth, which provides programming for adult artists with a range of disabilities.

Creative Growth, the world's oldest and largest center for artists with disabilities, launches a year long celebration of its 40th anniversary, presenting new works by two of the studio’s most acclaimed artists, Dan Miller and William Scott.

Miller and Scott have each been widely collected within the contemporary art world, in addition to the honor of having their respective work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Creative Growth director, Tom di Maria shares, "Dan Miller and William Scott continue to personify Creative Growth’s mission of supporting artists with disabilities to reach the highest level of artistic achievement, it is with much veneration that we exhibit their work in our Oakland gallery."

The Creative Growth gallery will present new paintings on canvas, by William Scott alongside a new body of ceramic work and large-scale drawings and paintings by Dan Miller.

Also on view: As part of a tradition of introducing artists with disabilities from outside the Bay Area, Creative Growth debuts new work from Cincinnati-based Thunder Sky studio. This exhibtion will feature Thunder Sky artists Antonio Adams and Marc Lambert.  Adams artwork interprets society and current events, while Lambert creates evocative visions of the future via his paintings on found acoustic tile.

Alternative Guide To The UniverseCurated by Ralph Rugoff

Presented by the Hayward Gallery at London's Southbank Centre, Alternative Guide to the Universe surveys an artistic landscape that stretches to the far horizons of our imagination. Featuring contributions from self-taught artists and unlicensed architects, fringe physicists and visionary inventors, it serves up bracingly fresh perspectives on the world we live in. It also offers a rare opportunity to discover remarkable paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and architectural models created by an eccentric and inspiring group of individuals from around the world.

Creative Growth artist William Scott is among 25 contributors to the exhibition who explore fictional identities and design imaginary cities, build healing machines and record the unseen energy flows of our bodies. They speculate on mysteries of time and space; create devices for time travel and communication with other dimensions; and fashion new letter forms designed to liberate the alphabet from the strictures of Western civilization.

Taken together, their work conjures a kind of a parallel universe where ingenuity and inventiveness trump common sense and received wisdom.

Beyond Trend Runway Event 2013 Featured in San Francisco Chronicle

Runway fashion shows are not usually known for being heartfelt. But the crowd at Beyond Trend, the April 6 event benefiting Creative Growth, an Oakland center for artists with mental, physical and developmental disabilities, demonstrated unbounded enthusiasm for a dazzling array of fashions.

To say the crowd was wowed is an understatement. “Have a tissue at the ready,” warned a gallery volunteer, as the show began. She was right — there were tears.

Creative Growth artists, whose disabilities including autism and Down syndrome, modeled their own creations alongside more traditional models. But the applause for the pretty and skinny walkers, many of whom modeled local designer Erica Tanov’s spring-summer 2013 line crafted from textiles designed by Creative Growth artists, didn’t come close to the din that welcomed the locals, who radiated genuine, unfettered joy.

As 18 of Creative Growth’s artists strutted, shuffled or danced the runway, the crowd of nearly 300 gasped and cheered wildly, applauding their one-of-a-kind designs.

Ranging from the brightly embroidered clothes by Christine Szeto, whose pants read “We Understand Each Other” among other slogans (in both Chinese and English), to a sheath by Dinah Shapiro of knitted multicolored yarns, much of the work pushed the boundaries of fashion but would not have been out of place on a Fashion Week stage.

And there were surprises. William Scott, whose work is now in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art, crept the walkway in a full Spider-Man suit. Lauren Dare’s canvas dress, more of an envelope, really, was stunningly intriguing.

Jane Swim, a retired Oakland schoolteacher, whose daughter’s walk was one of the show’s most flamboyant (and popular), beamed with pride. “I feel like she got into Harvard,” she said. The crowd was filled with luminaries including Alice Waters, Ben Ospital and iconic New York editor Kim Hastreiter, founder of Paper Magazine, all members of the host committee.

Beyond Trend Runway Event & Fundraiser Saturday, April 6th—$100 to $250 ticket levels 6 to 9pm The event series culminates with Beyond Trend, a runway event and auction fundraiser. This year’s event features Erica Tanov’s Spring/Summer 2013 line, based on artwork by Creative Growth artists and including original, one-of-a-kind textile pieces from the Creative Growth studio, styled by Anne Hartford of Maribel, Karen Anderson of Mercy Vintage, and Erica Tanov. Menu designed by Charlie Hallowell of Pizzaiolo, Cal Peternell of Chez Panisse, and Samin Nosrat of Tartine Afterhours. Live music and DJ sets by Tommy Guerrero & Friends.

Creative Growth at Galerie Art Cru, Berlin

We are pleased to annonce our first Creative Growth group show in Berlin with Galerie Art Cru, Berlin's only gallery specializing in Outsider Art.  We will be presenting the works of Luis Aguilera, Dwight Mackintosh, Dan Miller, Donald Mitchell, Merritt Wallace, and George Wilson.  If you're traveling to Germany in the next few months, go check out our show!
