CREATIVE GROWTH | SKY BLUE AT EBMUD GALLERY

March 18 – April 24, 2024

EBMUD Oakland Administration Building

2nd Floor Lobby

375 11th Street (bet. Webster & Franklin)

Oakland, California

Sky Blue: a Creative Growth Art Show is a celebration of expansiveness and fresh opportunity. The opening of this exhibition, marks many historic firsts as Creative Growth’s newly formed Black Artist Group collaborated with EBMUD on the details that determined each aspect of the show. Founding member of the Black Artist Group, Tanisha Warren had this to share about working with fellow artists to consider the curation and timeline of the project, “It will be so exciting for us to see this show. We all worked together as a team and were inspired by each other’s ideas. Nothing quite like Sky Blue has ever happened.”

Like the boundless feeling this new history brings, The Black Artists Group hopes their audience will be inspired by the limitlessness of a clear blue sky. They had this to say about the show’s very uplifting theme: Sky Blue is a fun day with Creative Growth artists. A glorious day. A blessed day. New beginnings, just like spring. You might be inspired. When you go outside on a lovely day, there are birds, water, waves, the ocean. Blueberries. Cookouts. Luncheons. Think about food! The sky is bright sunshine. Day time. Happy. Flowers. Amazing. Life. Sky Blue is infinity. It goes on forever. Sky Blue and Creative Growth mean connections. Respect. Nature. Respect Mother Earth, she gets me out of the house. We’re family here. We have different personalities. We have intelligent disabilities. We love art. Art is human. We paint and create. We speak for ourselves. You can come here where it’s safe, where no one will criticize you or put you down. We give people room to get through.

Possibilities are endless like the sky. Be yourself without judgment. We’re all intelligent people. We are all different. We are family and friends. D’Lisa Fort, of the Black Artists’ Group, had this to say about Sky Blue, “We are honored for the opportunity to show with EBMUD. Thank you for helping us share our work and organization with the community. We hope it will help us bring even more visitors to see us at Creative Growth!”

An artist reception will be held on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024, 12 noon – 1:30 pm

The exhibit is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm

Upcoming Creative Growth Exhibition: John Martin, A Self-Portrait

Join us for a solo retrospective of John Martin’s 38-year career at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland. The show opens on February 1st, 2024 and will run through March 6th, 2024.

John Martin was born in 1963 in Marks, Mississippi, and now lives and works at the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California. Martin's art, which includes drawings, ceramics, and woodwork, blends memories of his family farm in Mississippi with his current urban life in Oakland. His work often features images of trucks, snakes, pocket knives, cell phones, and other items from his collection of found objects. These items have been a significant part of his work since he began at Creative Growth in 1987. Martin's art not only captures the function of these objects but also plays with their practicality, creating extraordinary animal combinations, oversized Leatherman tools, and enigmatic text. In his unique style, fish transform into knives, alligators turn into saws, and John himself is reimagined as a Nokia phone. A multi-tool unfolds to reveal a smiling shark. Martin's clever humor shines through his work, transforming everyday items into a dynamic and illustrative visual language.
